Digital Vetting

Following consultation with the executive committee, members of the board and of the vetting steering committee, it has been decided that every object exhibited on TEFAF Online will be subject to TEFAF’s diligent vetting process, to be carried out digitally. Some objects may have been physically vetted during previous TEFAF fairs and this will be taken into consideration.

Digital vetting cannot compete with physical vetting as regards the possibility of scientific analysis supported by a fully equipped scientific research team. Unlike all objects on display at physical TEFAF fairs, objects on TEFAF Online will not be physically examined. However, TEFAF will endeavour to provide the most stringent possible digital vetting procedure, which can best be compared to the pre-vetting of objects included in fair catalogues and for pre-fair marketing purposes. The Art Loss Register will check all objects on TEFAF Online against their database. If no match is found in the register, the statement ‘checked by the Art Loss Register’ will appear against every object on TEFAF Online.

The carefully considered TEFAF Online format of only one highlight per gallery will ensure the highest quality of artworks and research and continues the TEFAF tradition of offering both exhibitor and collector the best possible experience and quality, this time in a virtual environment.

In order to achieve this, TEFAF brings together the world’s leading experts across a multitude of disciplines to implement and adhere to TEFAF’s vetting procedures and regulations. This allows TEFAF to create a standard that applies across all of its fairs.

Vetting Committees are composed primarily of academics, curators, conservators, conservation scientists and independent scholars.

In the days before each of the Fairs opens, TEFAF’s vetting committees undertake a meticulous examination of every piece on display with regard to authenticity, condition and attribution to ensure that the object is worthy of display. Exhibits are accepted for display once they have been approved by the relevant committee.


Vetting TEFAF Scientific Research Team Checking
The Vetting Committees are supported by the TEFAF Scientific Research Team (SRT) who provide access to advanced on the spot instrumentation and scientific research techniques, essential to the vetting process. The use of these tools, in tandem with the expertise and extensive experience of the vetters, enable a holistic approach to vetting.


The ALR is the world’s largest privately managed database of stolen, missing and looted works of art and antiques. In addition to being vetted for authenticity, attribution and condition, exhibits at TEFAF are checked against the Art Loss Register (ALR) database of 500,000 items subject to a claim. The ALR includes items reported as lost or stolen, subject to a dispute or loan, or with other issues. Any object found to be subject to a claim is removed from the fair immediately.

Thanks to this procedure, buyers at TEFAF Fairs can feel confident that any object offered to them has been the subject of great scrutiny.
